Selecting your Additional Coverage
After you apply for Medicare Benefits with the Social Security Administration (SSA), you will need to decide which type of additional coverage is the best fit for you - Medicare Advantage plan (Part C), Medicare Supplement or "Medigap" plan, or Prescription Drug plan (Part D).
What are the Additional Medicare Options in New Jersey?
If you need additional coverage not provided by Medicare Part A or B, you may qualify to choose from the following options:

Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)
- Must apply within either the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) which runs from October 15th thru Dec. 7th annually
- Have a qualifying Special Enrollment Period (SEP) such as retirement/losing employer coverage, moving to a new state, or new to Medicare.
- Cannot have end-stage renal disease.
- Must be a resident of the New Jersey county where the plan is offered.

Medicare Supplement or "Medigap" Plan
- Health history questions can be asked if you are are not in your Open Enrollment Period or have guaranteed issue rights.
- Must be a resident of New Jersey.
- Cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.
- Plans do not include prescription drug coverage.

Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)
- Must apply within either the Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) which runs from October 15th thru Dec. 7th annually or have a qualifying Special Enrollment Period (SEP) such as retiring from employment or new to Medicare.
- Must be a resident of New Jersey.
- Cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time.
